Underage Drinking: Signs and Dangers
- Underage drinking is common and risky – about 70% of teens try alcohol by 18. Drivers include peer and “digital” pressure, stress, and easy access (fake IDs, older friends, theft, lax ID checks). Harms include poor grades, legal trouble (possession, DUI), risky sexual behavior, injuries/alcohol poisoning, disrupted brain and physical development, and higher risks of depression, suicide, and future substance problems. Drinking and driving is especially dangerous and can derail a teen’s future.
- Signs to watch: smell of alcohol, hidden containers, new or secretive friend groups, mood changes/defensiveness, rule-breaking, and school issues. Parents can help by talking early and often, setting clear rules, teaching refusal skills, securing alcohol at home, and creating a “never ride with a drinking driver” plan.
